Maria Concordia Mine 2nd level: Standard size

Breath in… breath out… the calming sound of bubbles breaks the ultimate silence of the abandoned mine’s abyss. The feeling of seclusion is so calming. The only factor ruining this meditative experience is the fact that soon our runtime is over. The beauty of the magnesite veins and crystal clear water will be preserved in our memories, but is that enough? Don’t we have technical skills and hardware to take beautiful Maria Concordia to the virtual world and be able to experience it at all times?

Well, the team behind The Maria Concordia Project does. Using photogrammetry technology and some odd-looking custom inventions, they put their efforts into making a digital, accurate 3d replica of the mine with all the details and its vivid colors.

Working with the world’s top photogrammetry specialists, the team is making this extraordinary dive site available to everyone, even to non-divers. And as Marcin Stempniewicz (the brain behind the operation) says: ‘We’re not super interested in the 3d model itself . It’s just a tool, nothing more than a tube of decent ultramarine for a master painter.’

The project is about storytelling. Using a variety of techniques, from static visualizations, animations, photorealistic cross sections to Augmented and Virtual Reality experiences, the team is sharing the captivating story of one of the most beautiful underground places in Europe.

The poster available from Cave-prints is a one of a kind illustration of the photogrammetry survey results. It has been created using the original 3D model acquired by the Submerged Foundation, the author of the scanning project. In addition, the poster was supplemented with many interesting data, such as the details about the flooded levels, mine history and the photogrammetry survey process description

About the artist

Marcin Stempniewicz

3d guy by profession, cave diver by passion. Working with AR and VR on a daily basis made it easier for me to understand and overcome at least some of the basic challenges of underwater photogrammetry.  Unlike wreck 3d scanning, underwater cave scanning is a huge unknown - things like gear setup, reconstruction workflow, even the way we publish the reconstructed model - it’s all subject to trials and errors. Having said that, it’s a bit like cave exploration itself. I don’t know what’s behind the corner, but won’t rest until I find out.

Cave Prints - cartography, history, and cave diving

We bring the beauty of the dangerous world of overhead diving right to your walls. Our mission is to share the passion for history, cartography and underwater exploration

A touch of adventure

One step closer to the submerged world

Our unique underwater cartography prints make it possible for you to bring the thrill of cave diving and beauty of the submerged world straitght to your wall.

Thrill of cave-diving in premium quality

Unique aesthetics

Meticulousness is key in cave diving. One small detail can make all the difference in the success of the entire dive. We take the same approach to our prints, choosing carefully between top quality mediums and print technologies.
